10 days and counting. Yes, I have been working from home since the COVID-19 took the world by storm. Everyone has been using COVID-19 or at-least hearing it somewhere. Allow me to let you in this little fact. COVID-19 stands for Corona Virus Disease 2019. The world has gone into lock-down throwing stock markets into a tizzy. Offices have been shut down while the only things in demand are sanitizers and face masks.
Sincere token of thanks to employees of hospitals, police, banks and other industries where the daily grind is still unavoidable. Prayers with them and thousands who have suffered.
Governments across the world are trying their best to contain it using various measures. Sealing borders, schools, gym and pubs closure, countrywide screening and free medical tests are to name a few.
It’s in everyone’s best interest to take the necessary precautions and keep at it.
Somewhere between all this panic and scary news, we all know that the work goes on as usual and though you may get a breather we all know that the world wouldn’t stop. Imperative that we do our bit and keep the wheel moving. While everyone may not be privileged or entitled to work at their convenience, some have this entitlement to work from the comfort of their home. After-all what better than to socially distance yourself and the work doesn’t suffer either. It’s not hiding in comfort but a way to put a stop to the mayhem already created. One less patient is all that is required.
Working from home has its advantages and disadvantages but the focus is to contain the spread and yet be efficient. Now, why I say to embrace this period and utilize it in the best possible way?
Connect with yourself:
Introspect. Yes, you should do this. Why? Seldom we find ourselves exhausted and unhappy going through a daily routine. We are so stuck in our lives that thinking is just not a priority anymore. We engulf ourselves with stress, anxiety, and pressure. The last thing we prioritize is us. The work takes a toll on us and in quest of becoming better and better every day we lose touch with our inner-self. Influences, socially and professionally have better of us and we drift further away from ourselves. Think of this a timeout which happens between games when teams re-group and unite only this it’s you.
You may do a daily analysis of how your routine is. Surprisingly, you will find many areas you need improvement in. Now, you can’t force things upon yourself but isn’t it always good to learn something about you which may help to better you. Should you start your day early? What changes can you make to your working? Peak hours of your work? Time management of how you go about things. Look, these are small things but do you actually ever think about these. Now is the time. It took a pandemic of this sort to keep you home with minimum distractions, why not use it wisely.
Connect with your friends:
While we are at our daily hustle, we seem to forget this. You will be surprised to learn regarding your call history. Since you were sharpening your professional career for that raise and promotion, you tend to lose a few connections through all this. Make a call to that friend you spoke only last year. Ask about his family and him. Make a call to that friend who you had a wonderful time in college. Relive few old memories. Make a call to that friend you exchanged notes with during exams. Make a call to that friend you had some altercation with. Life just happens while we make plans on how to live it. Do it.
“If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.”
– Zig Ziglar
You have a family. Right?
People just don’t realize how they neglect the family. Take the opportunity to learn what happens when you are out working. Some extra time helping your kid in homework and learning what you might miss daily. You may have a father and mother who might be at home waiting for you daily. When you show up at the end of the day they are bound to produce only happy faces for they never want you to see the pain behind those wrinkly faces and aging bodies. Let them know you are there for them for they were with you all the time. Learn what bothers them and how you may fix it. There’s no trumpet to beat but silent assurances and honest efforts are all that is required. Pretty sure you’ll learn things which you may have missed or skipped asking since you were all drenched trying to become that number 1 employee.
You always wanted it:
Haven’t you been complaining whole of your life regarding this? I have often heard everyone complaining including me. You have it now. It was the ultimate goal of an employee.
You have what you always wanted and it’s a luxury few get.
“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.”– Soren Kierkegaard
